Mutual funds
While there is a lot to know about mutual funds, the following is a brief overview of the basics. Each mutual fund has its own particular features and benefits. These are important and can vary.
A mutual fund is a pool of money invested for you by an investment firm in a variety of ways using stocks, bonds or government securities. By owning shares in a mutual fund instead of buying individual stocks or bonds directly, your investment risk is spread out. Additionally, because the mutual fund buys and sells large amounts of securities at a time, its costs are often lower than what you would pay on your own. Each mutual fund is different in its make-up and philosophy. As an investor, you should look for funds with objectives and risk levels that match yours.
